History

The history On the 1840 Tyth Map, the cottage is listed as plot 667 Lochfields Cottages and has been dated to around 1790 by the St Fagan's Museum. The existence and style of both the bread oven and brickwork confirm this. The cottage still has an original 'coffin drop' in the beamed ceilings and we are advised that this is very rare and not found in any other properties in the area. Books about the construction of the Glamorgan Canal, amongst others, describe these cottages as being built for the canal workers and their families.
