Property description
This Grade ll * listed property was built circa 1722 and is a fine example of an early Georgian period house that only a handful of streets within central Westminster can lay claim to. The house used to be a former public house and is believed to be one of the oldest examples still standing in Westminster. It still carries the name of “Salutation House” to this day. In 1995 the house was awarded a blue plaque by English Heritage to commemorate Lord Reith who lived here from 1924 to 1930. Lord Reith was the founding father of the BBC and was the first Director General of the corporation at a time when only radio was being broadcast.
A rare and substantial corner house with timeless period charm, arranged over five floors and extending to over 4000 square feet . The house offers excellent entertaining space with an impressive ground floor wood panelled dining room, a separate kitchen/breakfast room and a fabulous first floor drawing room. Including the lower ground there are six double bedrooms including the principal bedroom with its own en suite and a further kitchenette/living room on the top floor. The first floor has access to a small terrace with a further larger top floor terrace affording breath taking views of Parliaments’ Victoria Tower and Westminster Abbey. The lower ground floor, with its own entrance, is a self- contained modernised apartment with a spacious living/dining room, double bedroom, utility room and en suite bathroom
Situation
The house lies on the corner of Barton Street and Cowley Street in one of the most sought after areas of central Westminster. This small and exclusive enclave of Westminster offers a surprisingly tranquil setting and is only moments away from the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and St. James’s Park with its 43 hectares of wide open spaces. The transport links are superb and include nearby St. James’s Park (District & Circle lines), Westminster (Circle, District and Jubilee lines) and Victoria station (Gatwick Express, Mainline railway, District, Circle & Victoria lines
