Property description

In the heart of Port Isaac, a charming fisherman's cottage tucked away in one of the port's prettiest corners, a stone's throw from the harbour.

Description
Bar Cottage sits prettily in Dolphin Street, a quiet little backwater at the heart of old Port Isaac. Believed to have been constructed before 1720 it is the archetypal stone and slate fisherman’s cottage and is a Grade II listing. The white rendered front façade with pale blue painted windows is very attractive.

Enter through a walled courtyard to the front entrance, a half glazed stable door which leads directly into the open plan living room. This is a beautifully light room with higher beamed ceilings than is usual in such cottages. Good sized sash windows front and back and another glazed stable door add so much to the bright and airy impression of this whole open plan living space. A wood burner set into a smart fireplace supplements the effective underfloor heating beneath the traditional flagstones.

There is nothing crowded about this lovely living room: It has room for large sofas and a dining table for six. The kitchen area, while compact, maximises the space with cleverly fitted cupboards, an electric Aga which fits perfectly, and a Belfast sink with antique style taps and tiles. A window seat overlooks the courtyard garden. Through the stable door to the rear is a cobbled path and just a few metres to Squeeze Belly Alley, though the direct view is of the neighbouring pretty cottage garden.

A painted wooden staircase turns to the first floor and two ensuite double bedrooms. They both have a view to the west over neighbouring cottages, with a glimpse of the Golden Lion from one. Both have sloping high beamed ceilings and shelving with hanging space in one and a cupboard in the other. The en suite shower rooms are bright, nicely tiled, modern and spacious.

The overall impression is of a naturally well-lit, roomy interior, recently painted white throughout, an inviting space with a relaxing atmosphere.

The courtyard is a suntrap, and its high walls provide a sense of privacy despite the proximity to neighbouring cottages. A secure gate makes it a safe space for children and pets. A large garden table is in place for al fresco meals and pots of herbs thrive in the sunshine.

Location
There is always a buzz of activity in Port Isaac. This pretty, coastal port is spectacularly sited on the rugged stretch of North Cornwall coastline that runs from the Camel Estuary at Rock to the Devon/Cornwall border at Bude.

Port Isaac was a busy fishing port and from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century it was an active harbour, shipping cargoes of stone, coal, timber and pottery. Fishing and fish-processing were also very important and there are still fishermen working from the harbour.

The village is now internationally renowned for its association with the television series 'Doc Martin'. Most of the old part of the village consists of picturesque 18th and 19th century cottages, many of which have been officially listed due to their architectural and historic importance and are located within narrow alleys and streets that wind down the steep hillside toward the harbour.

The village also hosts Restaurant Nathan Outlaw which was voted the best restaurant in Britain in August 2017 by the Good Food Guide and holds two Michelin stars.
