This shrub boasts attractive white flowers and glossy green leaves and was first selected at the famous nurseries at Daisy Hill, Newry. Other plants include the large and beautiful Lemonwood tree (Pittosporum Eugenioides), which is an attractive, golden leaved tree from the forests of New Zealand, and is rarely seen in the UK or Ireland; also a large Acradenia Frankliniae, a rare tree from Tasmania which has pretty white flowers in early summer. The moist and acidic soil enables the garden to have an impressive display of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas which thrive in the sheltered position. The particular plants were chosen by the Resides to provide an almost year round display of colour and scent with minimum maintenance. All together they provide a wonderful surround and create a secluded atmosphere to the house.

The gardens, which were renowned throughout Ireland, were featured on several occasions on television, and for many years were regularly opened to the public under the National Trust’s Garden Scheme.


From Rostrevor, travel along the beautiful Coast Road towards Kilkeel. Approximately half mile past Killowen Village, turn right at the "Killowen Cottage" sign, and at the end of that roadway turn left into the entrance gate.
