Property description

Handsome three storey Grade II listed former malting house located in the heart of Marshfield, a pretty Cotswold village at the north end of St Catherine's Valley, just outside Bath. The house offers over 6000sq ft of living accommodation with a flexible layout of bedrooms and reception rooms and also parking for a number of cars.

An imposing property comprising large, well-proportioned rooms with high ceilings and lots of period features. It is 6 miles from Bath, well-located for Bristol, and has excellent commuting to London via the newly electrified line from Chippenham.

The 34' kitchen/dining room is dominated by the floor to ceiling malting oven which really imbues the house with an incredible sense of history. There are stable doors at either end of the kitchen which open out to the courtyard garden, so it is lovely to open them up in summer and connect to the outside space.

The malting house was the building where cereal grain was converted into malt by soaking it in water, allowing it to sprout and then drying it to stop further growth. The malt was then used in brewing beer and whisky. On the ground floor the drawing room and library have the original corniced high ceilings, sash windows and working shutters as well as beautiful original alcoves on either side of the fireplaces.

There is another sitting room and a bedroom with en suite shower room on the ground floor. On the first floor there are five bedrooms including the master which has a dressing room and en suite bathroom. Two of the bedrooms have full height exposed A frame beam ceilings which look very dramatic.

At the front of the house the sitting room and pink bedroom have outstanding views over the hills towards Colerne and Box through the original sash windows. On the second floor there are five rooms, three to the front with views, and a kitchen and bathroom. This floor could be incorporated into the main house or used as an apartment to provide rental income.

During the Second World War Dylan Thomas lived in the house which was an artists’ bolt-hole. This is where he wrote his famous satire 'The Death of the King’s Canary' in conjunction with his host, John Davenport the art critic.

The Malting House is located in the heart of Marshfield’s high street. Marshfield was a prosperous Cotswold wool town and the high street is very picturesque with seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth century homes. There are two very well regarded pubs in the High Street, the Catherine Wheel, and the Lord Nelson Inn and the pretty Sweetapples tea shop is worth a visit. There is also an interiors shop, Vintage and Brown, butcher, post office, general shop, veterinary practice and primary school rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. The village hosts the famous Marshfield Mummers every Boxing Day - an event attended by hundreds, coming from afar.

Marshfield offers very good access to Chippenham railway station, 10 miles away, and 1 hour and 14 minutes to London. The World Heritage City of Bath is 6 miles away.
