Information regarding the origin of the bar:

Whitegates Woolton have a truly amazing property with an excellent piece of Liverpudlian history as the boat themed bar is made from the rms Empress of Canada!... And it's situated next door to the former home of the manager of The Beatles, Brian Epstein!

The Empress was built in Clydebank, Scotland in 1928 and was originally named the Duchess of Richmond, an ocean liner who’s first cruise sailed from Liverpool to Freetown and back on January 26th 1929, returning back to Liverpool docks March 8th.

After that the 20,022-ton ship was requisitioned as a troopship during WW2 transporting troops to North Africa and even played a role in the Tizard Mission which entailed moving secret military equipment from Britain to the us!

In 1946, the Duchess of Richmond was overhauled and refitted throughout in Scotland, returning to Liverpool as the rms Empress of Canada in 1947, sailing from Liverpool to Montreal as part of the vastly reduced post-war liner services.

Sadly, on January 25th 1953, the Empress caught fire in the Gladstone Docks of Liverpool and capsized. She was then re-floated and taken to La Spezia in Italy to be scrapped…

…But not before parts were salvaged by a local Liverpool resident and cleverly re-used to make a bar in his home!

The whole bar, from the wood to the portholes comes from the rms Empress of Canada… even the bell!

The bar is fully fitted and functions as any other bar with gas pumps, fridges, sink and bar rules… there’s even an old style fruit machine called The Jolly Rodger adding to the authentic feel. The nautical theme carries on throughout the room with amazing sea-compasses and maps.
