The Anchor is the only public house in the village of Combwich which is an ancient Somerset village built on the banks of the river Parrett estuary. This has been a port since the 15th century and at one time accommodated a river crossing.

The village has a primary school, post office stores, rowing club, and a social club serving the pleasure boating harbour.

Combwich wharf is in the process of being refurbished to enable the transportation of goods destined for Hinkley Point. Steart Marshes adjoins the village and is the first of wwt’s working wetlands which is providing flood defence for local homes and businesses producing productive farmland and a thriving nature reserve, this has become one of Somerset’s major tourist attractions for birdwatching, cycling and walking and is close to the Anchor Inn.

Combwich is 2 miles from the large village of Cannington. Combwich and Cannington have a population of circa 3,000 people. Cannington is home to an important agricultural college with walled gardens.

One of the country’s leading construction programmes is taking place at Hinkley Point which is approx 5 miles from Combwich with The Anchor being one of the closest public houses to Hinkley Point. Hinkley C is a 23 billion pound development which will last for 20 years to produce low carbon energy for 6 million homes. The development is brining circa 20,000 workers to Hinkley Point which is a major boost to the local economy and from which the Anchor Inn is benefitting.
