The name 'Vauxhall' comes from the head of King John's army, Faulke de Breaute, who owned a large house in the area during the 13th century called Faulke's Hall. Over time it became known as Foxhall, and eventually Vauxhall. The area became known to the public when the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens opened in the mid 17th century. In recent years, Vauxhall's riverside has undergone major redevelopment with the construction of a number of modern residential and office blocks, most notably the distinctive MI6 building at Vauxhall Cross.

Property to rent in Vauxhall is a mixture of ex-local authority flats that have been refurbished to a high standard, complete with security systems; flats in modern apartment blocks, often with views over the River Thames, and substantial Victorian terraced houses with gardens.

Houses to rent in Vauxhall such as Victorian townhouses offering four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and within easy walking distance of Vauxhall's mainline and tube stations, would expect to receive a monthly rental of £2,600. Flats to rent in Vauxhall in good quality Victorian townhouse conversions, offering contemporary fixtures and fittings and two bedrooms, are available for £1,150 per month.

Vauxhall is within the London Borough of Lambeth and covered by postcodes SW8, SE1 and SE11.
