The name 'Vauxhall' comes from the head of King John's army, Faulke de Breaute, who owned a large house in the area during the 13th century called Faulke's Hall. Over time it became known as Foxhall, and eventually Vauxhall. The area became known to the public when the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens opened in the mid 17th century. In recent years, Vauxhall's riverside has undergone major redevelopment with the construction of a number of modern residential and office blocks, most notably the distinctive MI6 building at Vauxhall Cross.
