Stockwell is a vibrant area in the London Borough of Lambeth, covered by postcode SW9. More affordable than neighbouring Clapham, it is popular with families, first time buyers and with investors looking for buy-to-let opportunities. From the 13th to the start of the 19th century, Stockwell was a rural manor on the edge of London prior to developing into an elegant middleclass suburb during the reigns of George IV and Queen Victoria. Following bombing in the Second World War, the area immediately around the underground station in Stockwell was extensively rebuilt, with mixed results. Fortunately, some of Stockwell's original grandeur can still be found, most notably in Stockwell Park Road and Stockwell Park Crescent, which form the Stockwell Park Conservation Area.
