Towards the end of the English Civil War, a discussion took place in the parish church of St Mary The Virgin, by Putney Bridge, between Oliver Cromwell and his Roundhead soldiers. Cromwell's men were concerned that they were removing King Charles and simply replacing him with a more powerful dictator. Oliver Cromwell acquiesced to his men's demands for a transparent democracy but when he gained power, the leaders were executed. St Mary's church still stands to the east of Putney Bridge and to the west, on Putney Embankment, is the starting point for the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
