The village of Mortlake appears in the Domesday Book, and the manor belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury until the time of Henry VIII. Mortlake almost certainly derives from the name of an early Saxon chief 'Morta' who controlled this part of the Thames, i.e. his 'lake', which originally meant a stretch of running water, rather than its modern meaning.
