Nestling between Sheen and Barnes and bounded by the River Thames to the north, Mortlake is part of the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames and covered by postcode SW14. The village of Mortlake appears in the Domesday Book, and the manor belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury until the time of Henry VIII. Mortlake almost certainly derives from the name of an early Saxon chief 'Morta' who controlled this part of the Thames, i.e. his 'lake', which originally meant a stretch of running water, rather than its modern meaning. Mortlake is rich in grand Georgian and Victorian houses, pretty cottages and some good, modern developments. Property to rent in Mortlake is readily available with spacious, four-bedroom Victorian terraced houses costing £1,800 per month. One-bedroom flats to rent in Mortlake are in the region of £1,000 per month, with two bedrooms available for around £1,300 per month.
