Nestling between Sheen and Barnes and bounded by the River Thames to the north, Mortlake is part of the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames and covered by postcode SW14. The village of Mortlake appears in the Domesday Book, and the manor belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury until the time of Henry VIII. Mortlake almost certainly derives from the name of an early Saxon chief 'Morta' who controlled this part of the Thames, i.e. his 'lake', which originally meant a stretch of running water, rather than its modern meaning. Mortlake is rich in grand Georgian and Victorian houses, pretty cottages and some good, modern developments. Property to rent in Mortlake is readily available with spacious, four-bedroom Victorian terraced houses costing £1,800 per month. One-bedroom flats to rent in Mortlake are in the region of £1,000 per month, with two bedrooms available for around £1,300 per month.

Amenities for properties in Mortlake

Mortlake is well-served with local restaurants and bars and there is also an excellent choice of restaurants in neighbouring Barnes and East Sheen. For recreation, the London Wetland Centre is a few minutes away in Barnes and due south, through East Sheen, is the vast expanse of Richmond Park. There are excellent schools in the London Borough of Richmond with at least six primary schools within or close to Mortlake. The local secondary school is Shene, in East Sheen, which is co-educational and scores well in the league tables. There is also a good selection of independent schools including, top of the league, St. Paul's School in Barnes.

Transport in Mortlake

The railway station in Mortlake has a good rail link to Waterloo Station and, down river, Barnes Bridge station is also an easy option. Bus routes 209, 419 and 969 serve the immediate area, and provide a fast link to Hammersmith. On the roads, the A3, M3, the M4 to Heathrow Airport and Bristol, and the M25, are all easily accessible, especially out of rush hour.
