Woolwich, with its strong military association, is a large residential area covered by postcode SE18 within the London Borough of Greenwich. Woolwich is located close to the Millennium Dome and within a five minute drive of the A2, giving quick access to the M25. And although Woolwich is in a London postcode it is very close to rural Kent, so finding open space is only a short drive away. Woolwich is being touted by some estate agents as south London's 'next big thing', and on closer inspection, with Woolwich selected as the venue for shooting events at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, improving transport links and new developments on the Royal Arsenal site, this is fast becoming a reality, and house prices are already increasing. If you are considering searching for property to rent in Woolwich, as well as waterside developments of apartments at Royal Arsenal, there is also a mixture of Victorian terraced houses and council blocks of flats to rent in Woolwich. Families who are searching for houses to rent in Woolwich will find larger Victorian properties in the area around Woolwich Common.
Amenities for Woolwich properties
Woolwich is currently undergoing a renaissance, with a number of new developments being planned around the town centre, which will include new homes, additional shops, cafés and a new Tesco store. Currently the vibrant town centre has extensive shopping facilities, especially around Powis Street, which is pedestrianised. There is also a popular street market by the entrance to Royal Woolwich Arsenal. Leisure facilities are excellent in Woolwich, with the new Waterfront Leisure Centre, which has a swimming pool and gym facilities, as well as a restaurant and café that overlook the River Thames. The area has a good selection of open space, with Woolwich Common, St Mary's Gardens (a former churchyard) and Royal Arsenal Gardens, which has a skateboard park and a children's playground.
Transport in Woolwich
Residents of Woolwich can travel from two mainline stations - Woolwich Arsenal and Woolwich Dockyard, with services operating into London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing Cross in approximately 20 minutes. A new DLR station is under construction next to Woolwich Arsenal station, and is scheduled to open during 2007. The Woolwich Ferry (a free service) connects SE18 with North Woolwich Station (in postcode E16) where passengers connect to the North London Line. London City Airport is located just across the river from Woolwich.
