Hampstead village started to expand following the opening of the North London Railway in the 1860s, now operated by Silverlink. Many of the luxurious houses were created during the 1870s and 1880s and, in 1907, Hampstead's underground station was built, the deepest station on the tube network. Other notable buildings include the Royal Free Hospital and Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath, with its fabulous views over the city of London.

Though now considered an integral part of London, Hampstead has retained much of its charm and has the enormous benefit of being adjacent to Hampstead Heath. Hampstead village is well known for its designer boutiques, restaurants and traditional pubs, such as the Holly Bush, the Old Bull & Bush, the White Bear, and the Spaniard's Inn, where infamous highwayman Dick Turpin took refuge. Jack Straw's Castle, on the edge of the Heath, has now been converted into residential flats. Hampstead's large Victorian Library and Town Hall were recently converted and extended into a creative industries centre and Hampstead even has its own cinema. For music lovers there's Kenwood House, which holds open-air concerts during the months of July and August.

There are numerous state and independent schools in Hampstead including Christ Church Primary School; and Hampstead School, which is a large, mixed, comprehensive.

Hampstead residents can access the Northern Line via underground stations in Hampstead and Belsize Park. There is also a railway station called Hampstead Heath, between the Royal Free Hospital and Hampstead Heath, which is served by the Silverlink North London Line.
