Hampstead village started to expand following the opening of the North London Railway in the 1860s, now operated by Silverlink. Many of the luxurious houses were created during the 1870s and 1880s and, in 1907, Hampstead's underground station was built, the deepest station on the tube network. Other notable buildings include the Royal Free Hospital and Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath, with its fabulous views over the city of London.
