The Isle of Dogs is a horseshoe-shaped peninsula, due south of Poplar, surrounded on three sides by the River Thames. It is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and has four main areas: Blackwall, Cubitt Town, Millwall and Canary Wharf, which has the tallest habitable building in Britain, at 244m (800 feet) high.

It is near the northern entrance to Greenwich Foot Tunnel which leads to the Cutty Sark, Greenwich and Deptford. For children, there is Mudchute Park and Farm which has, within its 40 green acres, farm animals, a riding school and regular summer play schemes. The main shopping area for the Isle of Dogs is Canary Wharf which contains over 140 shops, cafés and restaurants; a multiplex cinema, and a large Waitrose and Tesco Metro. There is an Asda Superstore near Mudchute DLR station. Much investment has gone into local primary schools including Harbinger, Arnhem Wharf, and Cubitt Town; and secondary schools such as George Green.

There are DLR stations in West India Quay, Canary Wharf, Heron Quays, South Quay, Crossharbour, Mudchute, and Island Gardens; and access to the Jubilee Line via the London Underground station in Canary Wharf.
