Property to rent in Blackfriars

Blackfriars is steeped in history, which you can really feel when visiting the gas lit grounds of The Temple and the local churches, which provide most of the area’s open spaces. At lunchtime, they are often full of office workers, especially St. Bride's with its graceful spire that was once described as "a madrigal in stone".

The name Blackfriars was first used in 1342 and derives from the black habits of the Dominican Friars. Their priory was eventually closed in 1538 during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries.

These days, Blackfriars is a commercial district in the London Borough of the City of London, EC4. Property is a mixture of luxury flats in new developments, flats in Victorian mansion blocks and, towards Fleet Street, flats in converted office buildings. The average price of one-bedroom flats to rent in Blackfriars is £1,600 – £1,900 per month. If you are looking for two-bedroom flats, you should expect to pay in the region of £2,000 - £2,400 per month.

If you walk across the Millennium Bridge from south to north there is an excellent view of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Close to the cathedral, the wine and sandwich bars of the financial district give way to more touristy fare, with major retail outlets concentrated near Ludgate Circus.

Although shopping in Blackfriars is limited, the excellent transport links ensure that you are no more than half an hour away from almost everywhere in London, including Covent Garden. Another good place to visit is Gabriel's Wharf, an attractive group of craft shops, boutiques and cafés, which is just over the river from Blackfriars on the South Bank; this pleasant square is formed by the backs of warehouses painted to resemble house-fronts. While south of the river you could watch a play at Shakespeare’s Globe or visit Tate Modern.
