Local Area

Yelverton provides a useful selection of shops, a bank, garage and hotel, whilst the ancient Stannary town of Tavistock, 6 miles, and the historic naval port of Plymouth about 10 miles, collectively offer extensive educational, recreational, cultural and shopping facilities.

The picturesque villages of Walkhampton, Meavy and Buckland Monachorum are all within a few miles and retain good primary schools, churches and pubs. On the edge of Buckland Monachorum is the Buckland Abbey Estate, formerly the home of Sir Francis Drake and now under the custodianship of the National Trust.

The community is well served by local school buses (including Plymouth and Tavistock schools) and county bus services, whilst the A386 Tavistock-Plymouth road facilitates easy access to the A38, just north of Plymouth and the A30 at Sourton, both dual carriageways to Exeter and the M5 motorway.

Tavistock is a thriving market town (voted Best Market town in 2003) situated on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in West Devon.

Within Tavistock there is an excellent variety of educational, recreational, cultural and shopping facilities, including primary and secondary schools (State and Private including Mount House, Kelly College, Tavistock College), a health centre, veterinary practice, banks, churches, hotels, shops and offices.

Tavistock boasts a plethora of shopping outlets, including both high street names and individual boutiques. In addition there is the award winning Crebers delicatessen, and The Country Cheese Shop.

In the centre of the town is the Pannier Market with various markets held throughout the week and an open-air French market is regularly held in Bedford Square.

The Historic Naval city of Plymouth, offers extensive further amenities including a regular train service via Exeter to London; an airport with links to London, the Channel Islands and by charter other continental destinations, and seasonal ferry services to France and Northern Spain. Sporting facilities in the area are excellent.

The Dartmoor National Park extends to over 300 square miles providing ample opportunities for walking and riding. Sailing and other world class water sports, including surfing, are available from a number of venues along the North and South coasts, whilst golf is available on the courses at Whitchurch, Tavistock, Yelverton, Saltash, Launceston and St. Mellion or at the driving range at Yelverton.

There are opportunities to fish (subject to Water Authority and riparian owners licences) on the rivers Tamar (Endsleigh), Tavy and East and West Dart. Coarse and game lake fishing is also available in the area.
