Crackenthorpe Hall was mentioned in the Domesday book, and has two notable Roman altar stones built into a gable wall. It has evolved over the centuries with Tudor, Restoration, Georgian and Victorian additions and alterations. The house has a colourful history, and assumed national importance when King Henry VI took refuge there, at the invitation of the Machell family, following his defeat by the Yorkists at the battle of Hexham in 1464. In 1905 royal links were reinforced when Edward VII attended the wedding of Percy Machell and Lady Valda (daughter of a European princess and related to Queen Victoria).
As currently configured, this substantial property comprises three self-contained units, but which could very easily be re-united to enable the whole to be used as a single dwelling, if so desired. The house has been sensitively refurbished by the present owners, and many period features, such as beamed ceilings, fine plasterwork and mullioned windows, have been retained throughout. An adjacent substantial former coach house has the potential for a variety of uses, subject to the necessary planning consents being granted. If required there is existing potential for an established income stream, from letting part of the house for self catering weekend breaks.
In addition, the house enjoys some 2 acres of formal gardens, adjoining which are mature mixed woodlands, rich in flora and fauna, providing a high degree of privacy. The property benefits from approximately 1.75 miles of part double/part single bank fishing on the River Eden. This represents a very rare opportunity to acquire a substantial part of a river with a national reputation, which was enhanced in the recent past by its designation as - Best River in England' by the Environment Agency. The Eden is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Conservation Area, and a Special Area of Conservation. In all the property extends to approximately 31 acres.
