Situation
Coombe Court lies on the eastern side of Dartmoor National Park, under a mile from Moretonhampstead and within easy reach of the cathedral city of Exeter, Chagford and the South Coast. It benefits from a wonderfully secluded private position, with all the benefits
of a superbly accessible location.
The small town of Moretonhampstead has good facilities with an excellent butcher/delicatessen, bakery, chemist and general store. There is also a cottage hospital, beautiful church, a brand new primary school, public library, several pubs, a hardware store
and a Post Office. Wider choices for shopping are available at either Exeter, 13 miles distant, or Newton Abbot to the south, with Okehampton - with a Waitrose - to the north. The popular old market town of Chagford is also close by.
Exeter St David's provides a regular, fast, Intercity rail service to London Paddington (from around two hours five minutes) and the Midlands, and both Exeter airport (home to Flybe and with an expanding service) and Bristol airport (offering Easy Jet among
its carriers) are within convenient reach. The A30 dual carriageway is about 7 miles to the north and provides fast access to the M5 at Exeter. The area is well served for schools with a range of well thought of private schools for girls and boys of all ages,
in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Tavistock and Torbay.
Being within Dartmoor National Park (England's biggest National Park), some of Devon's most dramatic and beautiful landscape is on the doorstep. This includes wonderful riding and walking within an area that extends to a breathtaking 365 square miles of open
space. Nearby Bovey Castle (just outside Moretonhampstead) offers a superb golf course, alternatively golf can also be played at Stover, near Newton Abbot, or at Okehampton. The beaches and estuaries of South Devon - including Torbay and the Dart Estuary -
are within easy reach and there are a host of good local pubs plus Gidleigh Park or Bovey Castle for five star cuisine.
Description
The property is approached over a private drive which is bordered by its own fields. Towards the end of the drive, on cresting the brow of the hill, you get the first glimpse of Coombe Court nestling in its private valley surrounded by its beautiful stone outbuildings.
From this point the drive opens up to the garden with mature trees and a stream bubbling down the side. The stream is fed by the old mill pond which overflows before passing under the drive and the original waterwheel, still working is situated on the back
of the old mill building. The drive leads up into the central courtyard which is tarmaced with a pale gravel finish perfectly matching the stone work of the outbuildings. Granite gateposts open into the inner courtyard in front of the house.
