Situation
The River North Esk is formed in Glen Esk, loveliest of the Angus Glens, by the confluence of two streams flowing from the Grampian Mountains, the waters of Mark and Lee. A short river, it runs over a bed of clean gravel by the evocatively named Rocks of Solitude
to emerge from a dramatic gorge at the Burn near Edzell in to the prime agricultural land of the Mearns.
The Morphie and Pondage beats on the River North Esk, known more widely as the Morphie Fishings, which here forms the boundary between the counties of Angus and Kincardineshire, are considered among the most productive spring beats in the country.
Description
The renowned Morphie Fishings Syndicate was established in 1991 under the terms of a 30 year lease when the owner of the fishings Joseph Johnston & Sons Ltd arranged for the fishings to be leased to an independent Custodian Trustee who holds the fishing rights
for the benefit of Syndicate Members.
In 2000 Joseph Johnston & Sons (Properties) Ltd contracted to sell its fishing interests to Amber Agriculture Ltd, the current owner.
Accommodation
A ghillie is employed throughout the season.
There are two fishing huts on the south bank and a shelter on the north bank below the Dyke. The main hut, situated by the Dyke pool, is a substantial (12' x 12') hut built in 1988 of brick with a profile metal sheeted roof, adjacent to the old netsman's store.
This hut is well equipped with cooking/ fridge facilities, table, chairs, wood burning stove, telephone, water and W.C. facilities, all brought together with a bay window giving widespread views up and down the best pools on the beat. The adjacent Earl's hut
is the original hut and is full of character being used principally by the ghillie. The Pondage hut is constructed of wood and used mainly as a store.
Directions
Travelling north from Montrose take the A92 Aberdeen road. Fork left onto the A937 signposted Laurencekirk. Pass under the railway bridge in Hillside and about one mile further on turn right by a pair of cottages (Denhead cottages). This small road takes you
over the railway after which you look down on the Morphie and Pondage beats. There is a car park by the river and a hard track which runs to the top of the beat.
