Description
The Chantry is a classic late Georgian/Regency house believed to have been built in 1803 with architecture inspired by Sir John Soane. It has a magnificent semicircular two-storey bay on its western elevation, while the southern elevation has a pillared porch
with double entrance doors.
Accommodation
The well-proportioned rooms enjoy plenty of natural light through large sash and bay windows. The reception hall has a fine arched and vaulted ceiling, a stone tessellated floor, and natural light through the delicate fanlight over the entrance doors. Off the
hall are the main reception rooms, beginning with the study, with its polished stripped floor, fireplace with tiled surround and fitted bookshelves.
The morning room has French doors opening onto the terrace with fine views over the west lawn and a most attractive open fireplace with a marble hearth and carved inlay marble surround. Inter-connecting doors lead into the drawing room with its beautiful semi-circular
bay, moulded cornicing, marble fireplace and three pairs of full-length French doors onto the terrace and gardens.
An inter-connecting door leads through to the dining room and this too has moulded cornicing and full-length French doors onto the gardens. A further door leads into the staircase hall with a most attractive staircase to the first floor and with its beautiful
fan light above the door leading back to the reception hall. The staircase hall also leads into the well-fitted kitchen, utility room and cellar.
The accommodation on the first floor also has classic late Georgian/Regency characteristics with light, elegantly proportioned rooms, good ceiling heights and attractive mouldings. Along the western elevation, the principal suite comprises a master bedroom
with an en suite bathroom and dressing room and there are a further 5 bedrooms (one with an en suite bathroom and dressing room) and a bathroom.
OUTSIDE
The Chantry is approached over a long tree-lined drive leading to a gravel parking area and turning circle to the front of the house. A fork off the drive leads to a coach house providing garaging and storage with parking for a number of cars.
The Chantry is set in lovely gardens including and edged by mature woodland, shrubberies and fine trees. To the west, its long sweeping lawns are bordered by banks of rhododendrons and other herbaceous plants and shrubs. The gardens feature a number of mature
trees, including cedar, beech and oak. The massed daffodils in the surrounding areas provide glorious colour in the spring. The gardens to the north of the house have the features of a magnificent cedar tree with an enclosed hard tennis court (in need of refurbishment),
and lead eastwards into a large walled garden, enclosed by an 3.5m (11'6") high brick wall through which gravelled paths are bordered by low box hedges. There are espaliers here as well as a vegetable garden and heated open air swimming pool with a pool house.
A large rear forecourt adjoins the garden, and features a number of outbuildings, including the brick-and tile coach house.
