WHAT IS SHARED EQUITY?

The New Supply Shared Equity Scheme is a Government scheme aimed at helping people on low incomes who want to own their own home but who can&146;t afford to pay the full price, including first time buyers, Housing Association tenants, Council tenants and members of the Armed forces. The initiative enables applicants to purchase between 51% and 80% of a new property provided by a Registered Social Landlord. If you are in any of the above groups, you could be considered for a 51% equity stake. For others, the minimum is 60%.
The Registered Social Landlord funds part of the price of the property and the buyer funds the rest. You will pay your share of the purchase price, along with legal costs, survey fees and any other costs associated with the purchase. You do not pay any form of rent to the Registered Social Landlord. If you are a current homeowner, you can still be considered for a Shared Equity property, however, you must sell your home to become eligible.
