TIMELESS APPEAL When they decided to move out of London, they found a beautiful Cobham home with some lovely original features and the most perfect of reception rooms
Situated within walking distance of local amenities, this attractive Victorian Semi-detached cottage boasts two delightful bedrooms, a superb drawing room with a limestone fireplace and an excellent dining room. Outside there is a south-west facing garden.
The Story
First thing in the morning, Lynette Turnbull heads to the sunlit drawing room for her morning coffee.
It's a lovely room in the evening too, with the living flame gas fire, it can become really cosy, she said.
The flow of house was what she and her husband James liked when they decided to move out of London, and they knew they could make the downstairs a great space for entertaining.
We'd rented so many properties over the years, we really wanted a great drawing room, and that's what we found here, she explained.
It really works well for socialising, from the inside through to the garden.
LOCATION, LOCATION
Location, however, was also important to the couple. Here, just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Cobham and with the station also within walking distance, they could have their cottage in the country but still be in London in under 45 minutes.
We were the first of our group to move out of London and we drew a big circle on the map as to where we wanted to go, and it was this turn-of-the-century property that really caught our eye, she said.
She added: After moving out of the city, we've grown very fond of living somewhere that has access to everything but still has a rural feel.
BRIGHT AND MODERN
The couple have not been scared to use bold colours throughout the downstairs and their scheme works beautifully with the style of the house itself.
We have modernised it quite a lot and are quite keen on bold colours so we have some fantastic pink horizontal striped wallpaper in the dining room, which adds to the feeling of an unusual, bright and colourful home.
Frosted glass doors between the rooms downstairs let the light flow through the kitchen and dining room, and the solid oak floors give a warm finishing touch to the décor. What's more, the front door features gorgeous stained glass that creates a rainbow effect
up the stairs when the light shines through.
Lynette describes the kitchen as perfect and functional with its black granite worktops and silver appliances. The back door leads out onto one of the two garden terraces, ideal for a glass of wine on sunny evenings.
VICTORIAN FEATURES
The pretty semi-detached cottage has two double bedrooms. The couple initially used the second bedroom as a guest room but it's now a nursery for their little boy.
It was great when we first moved here as our London friends loved to get away from the city and come to stay. Now we've been able to make it into a great children's room, she said.
The room also boasts some Victorian features, such as the original fireplace and restored sash window, which looks out over the garden.
The master bedroom also has its own pretty fireplace and has a turquoise feature wall to add a bit of colour and warmth to the room. The en-suite shower room, with its limestone tiling, has a luxurious rainforest showerhead, something Lynette can not speak
more highly of.
I love the showers in the main bathroom and the en-suite room, they are great additions and I have to drag myself out! she said.
GOOD TASTE
With the two terraces, a lawned section and flowerbeds outside, there's plenty of room for entertaining. And although the south-west facing garden is a simple and neat area, there's room for the green fingered too.
We've grown some good vegetables since we have been here, my husband has got quite into it! she said. In the summer, we eat outside as much as we can, having barbecues on the sunny evenings.
And she added: If I could have live in this house forever, I would.
Accommodation
Stepping through the front door with its leaded light panels, you will find yourself standing in the welcoming reception hall. A door to the right leads into the fabulous drawing room which boasts a contemporary fireplace with floating bookshelves to both sides
and a lovely bay window allowing an abundance of natural light to flood through. Returning to the hall you will locate the superb dining room which has a deep sash window and is decorated in bright hues, a simply wonderful place for entertaining guests.
At the hub of the home is the light and airy galley kitchen which has a range of integrated appliances and stylish granite work surfaces offering plenty of room to prepare meals. From the kitchen there is access to the side of the property and into the charming
garden. There is a utility cupboard housing the central heating boiler, washing machine and further shelving for additional storage. Completing this floor is the family bathroom which benefits from contemporary tiling and is a calming haven in which to relax
and unwind. Additionally there is a spacious under-stair cupboard.
FIRST FLOOR ACCOMMODATION
Ascend to the first floor where there are two delightful double bedrooms. The master is excellent and benefits from an en-suite shower and fitted wardrobes. The remaining bedroom is currently used as a child's room but is large enough for a standard double
bed and also has a fitted wardrobe cupboard. Both bedrooms have striking original fireplaces generating a wealth of character and charm. The loft is boarded and provides further storage space.
Setting the scene
About 20 miles south-west of central London, Cobham in Surrey is in a pretty commuter belt surrounded by parks and green areas.
Set in a quiet cul-de-sac, the Victorian cottage is the perfect retreat after a hard day's work in the city.
The south-west facing garden is ideal for entertaining with two terrace areas, a lawn and flowerbeds, which are suitable for growing a variety of flowers or vegetables. The garden is fully enclosed by close boarded fencing. Additionally there is also a large
garden shed.
There's a strong community feel with traditional old pubs nearby and green walks, but there are also familiar high street names within walking distance.
Within easy reach
Cobham and Stoke Dabernon railway station is about a 20-minute walk away from the house, and trains from there arrive at London Waterloo in just under 40 minutes.
Lynette said: Cobham is the last stop on the line that you are guaranteed to get a seat in the morning!
