The Green Building is set in Macintosh Village, the southern gateway to the remarkable transformation of Manchester City Centre, a thrilling example of the best in urban regeneration. This innovative landmark building is an extrovert fusion of stunning architectural design and environmental responsibility, created by two internationally acclaimed teams - developers Taylor Woodrow and architects Terry Farrell and Partners.
Conveniently located for the city centre and the stylish bars, restaurants, and leisure facilities around Macintosh Village, The Green Building provides striking one and two-bedroom apartments, constructed with materials that take up as little energy as possible in their production and make the impressive and sustained savings in emissions and energy consumption needed to achieve an eco-home certificate.
The Building
The Green Building combines three striking design elements: a high-spec cylindrical drum, housing the apartments, a dark blue plinth designed for a nursery school and a timber-faced rectangular 'tower'. Tiered galvanised steel private balconies project out of the curved facade in three columns, offering wide views of the energetic urban landscape of the village. The design, with its softly sheening 'skin' provides optimum insulation, making measurable energy consumption savings all year round. Solar thermal collectors provide up to 40% of the hot water, while a wind turbine generates electricity for lighting the communal areas. A central atrium adds light and ventilation.
The city of Manchester delivers the goods right across the cultural spectrum, with theatres, art galleries and museums and the world class Bridgewater Hall, home of the Halle orchestra. There's a wide choice of restaurants and bars, clubs and music pubs. As part of its preparation for the hosting of the Commonwealth Games the city created a range of sports facilities that are the envy of Europe and have turned it into a sporting Mecca- for both fans and athletes.
As you'd expect from a city of its size, Manchester has a huge choice of places to shop. A ten minute walk brings you to the city centre. The Victorian viaduct that borders the Green Building on one side has an eclectic selection of small shops and caf A Sainsbury's Local on the north side of Whitworth Street and a minimart within the Village provide a base for daily essentials.
The commitment to the environment evident in The Green Building finds expression in Macintosh Village as a whole through a focus on sustainable transport. The opening up of new streets and riverfront will create a hub in the heart of the village which will become the centrepoint of a whole range of pedestrian and cycle routes.
Oxford Road station, at the north east corner of the Village, provides a convenient link to the remainder of the city and the north west, while the mainline stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, are within easy reach. It's southerly location means it is also ideal for links to Manchester airport, a key link to continental Europe
