The crofting island of Jura lies
to the west of the Kintyre peninsula and is a short journey from its
neighbouring island, Islay by means of a regular car ferry. It is also served by a twice daily foot
passenger ferry to the mainland from April to October. Jura is populated by approximately 200
people and around 5000 deer, along with otters, eagles, seals and other
wildlife. Any view of the island is
dominated by the famous Paps of Jura, which are popular with hillwalkers who are
rewarded fantastic views from the three summits on a clear
day.
The village of Craighouse is
Jura’s main centre of population and is situated in the south east of the island
approximately three miles from the car ferry terminal. Craighouse offers a
welcoming pub/hotel, a restaurant, distillery, a very well stocked Post
office/village store, a Church, medical practice and a small Primary
school. The Jura Village hall also
hosts regular community, social and cultural events.
