Llanidloes is a small town on the upper-reaches of the River Severn, a few miles from Llyn Clywedog reservoir. A scenic mountain road passes the reservoir and connects Llanidloes to Machynlleth, about 25 miles to the north-west. Llanidloes is rich in medieval architecture with the most striking building being the half-timbered Market Hall, the only surviving structure of its type in Wales. It was used as a Court of Assizes in 1605 and John Wesley preached in the hall in 1748. Llanidloes has many other notable buildings including the 14th century Saint Idloes Church which has an amazing hammer-beam roof.
