Haverfordwest owes its existence to being the first safe place to ford the River Cleddau, when heading upstream from the estuary. The name comes from the Old English word haefer, meaning goat, so Haverfordwest is a place where goats were herded across the river. It developed into a thriving port with vessels sailing right into the centre of town, until the arrival of the railway in 1853 ended river trading. Today, Haverfordwest is a thriving market town that is very pretty, with many fine historic buildings and plenty of shops and amenities.
