Falkirk lies at the heart of Scotland. Historically Falkirk was the cradle of Scotland's industrial revolution in the 18th Century, being the earliest major centre of the iron casting industry, and at the forefront of canal construction when the Forth & Clyde Canal opened in 1790. The area continues to be a significant industrial and business centre, with many blue chip companies represented within the engineering, manufacturing, bio-technology and timber distribution industries. The area is one of Scotland's centres for growth, with a steadily rising population. The estate agents in Falkirk say that new housing is developing rapidly, and house prices are very competitive compared to surrounding areas. Other types of property for sale in Falkirk, such as traditional villas and canal side developments, are attracting people to come and live in the area.
In recent years, Falkirk town centre has gained a reputation for being one of the best shopping destinations in Scotland. The fully pedestrianised town centre has two large shopping centres, The Mall - Howgate, and Callendar Square. And out of town there are further shops at Central Retail Park. Families with children who are considering Falkirk property will discover there are numerous sports clubs and leisure facilities to suit all preferences, and when it's time to unwind, there is a good selection of cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy. For education requirements, The Community Schools Project will result in all eight high schools in the Falkirk area being rebuilt by 2008. The newly formed Forth Valley College (Falkirk College merged with Clackmannan College in Aug 2005 provides further education services to the community.
