Sitting at the head of the Cromarty Firth is Dingwall, the county town of Ross and Cromarty - just 12 miles from the City of Inverness. Dingwall was made a Royal Burgh in 1226, and is steeped in history. Whilst walking round the town you will discover there are many buildings of historical interest. Dingwall is known as ‘The Viking Capital of Scotland’, owing its place-name to Norwegian Vikings who ruled northern Scotland from about the end of the ninth century AD. Today, Dingwall is a bustling market town, having benefitted from the Cromarty Firth’s role in supporting the North Sea oil industry. There is a limited supply of property for sale in Dingwall, so it is advisable to register with estate agents in Dingwall, so they can alert you as soon a property comes on the market.
The majority of Dingwall’s high street has been by-passed by local traffic, making the area an ideal place to enjoy the variety of shops. The shops range from food stores, chemists, a post office, banks and newsagents together with major supermarkets and a weekly auction room. Families considering Dingwall property will discover the town has a large primary school and a secondary school, and is home to The Highland Theological College (HTC), where the Christian faith can be studied. The town also has a leisure centre and a good library, adjacent to which are the Community Centre and the Gaelic Resource Centre. Situated alongside the River Peffrey, a park, boating pond, tennis courts and children's play area provide a pleasant, tranquil setting for relaxation for all ages. For serious walkers, Dingwall is close to the Ben Wyvis Mountain.
