Lasswade's parish church was built in the 13th century and the 17th century Scottish poet, William Drummond of Hawthornden was laid to rest within it. In 1595, Sir John Lauder, a wealthy merchant, Treasurer of the City of Edinburgh, and 1st Baronet of Fountainhall, was born at Melville Mill, Lasswade; and Sir Walter Scott rented Barony House, formerly Lasswade Cottage, for 6 years from 1798.
