Balerno is a town of 6,500 residents, south-west of Edinburgh. Its a thriving community that retains the feel of a small town with beautiful countryside on its doorstep. The turnpike road in the 18th century encouraged people to settle in Balerno, and abundant water supplies from Pentland Hills powered the paper, flax, and barley mills. The arrival of the railway from Edinburgh saw the growth in many new houses but, in 1984, the station in Balerno was taken over by Balernos well-regarded Community High School. Today, Balerno train commuters travel 2 miles to the railway station in Curriehill, which is on the line linking Edinburgh to Glasgow Central.
