Kirkcudbright is situated on the Dee where it meets Kirkcudbright Bay in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south west Scotland. Kirkcudbright has a thriving community of artists living in and around the town, and is known as the 'Artists' town'. The charm of the town and surrounding area has attracted artists to the area for over a century, and it is since the first exhibition in the 1880's by E A Hornel (who came to prominence as one of the 'Glasgow boys'), Kirkcudbright has earned the reputation as an artists' town, rivalling St Ives in Cornwall and Pont - Aven in Brittany and is unique in Scotland. The estate agents in Kirkcudbright say that other well known features of the town are the pastel coloured houses and wide streets. The selection of property for sale in Kirkcudbright is varied, and includes modern detached bungalows, listed period cottages, traditional semi-detached houses, maisonettes and Georgian style townhouses.
Kirkcudbright has a wide selection of mainly family owned shops where almost everything can be bought, as well as art galleries, cafés and restaurants - parking is free all over town. Further afield, Dumfries (about 27 miles) offers a wider range of shops and local amenities. Families considering Kirkcudbright property will discover the town has two primary schools, with secondary schooling at the highly acclaimed Kirkcudbright Academy. The town has many sports and leisure facilities; these include a swimming pool, a yacht club, a marina, golf courses and a bowling green.
