Fort Augustus lies at the south-west end of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands surrounded by thickly forested hills. The village has a population of about 700, and much of its income derives from tourism. Fort Augustus was originally named after St Cummein but, following the defeat of the Jacobites by the English in 1715, a fort was built and the village was named after King George II's younger son, Prince William Augustus. Today, little remains of the fort which was incorporated into a Benedictine Abbey in 1876.
