Property for sale in Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie is at the northern end of Loch Ericht where it meets Glen Truim, and is one of the highest villages in Scotland at 358 metres or 1,160 feet above sea level. It is a beautiful village of white-painted buildings that lies on the A889 and are bypassed by the A9, the main Inverness to Perth road. The name 'Dalwhinnie' means 'meeting place' and it was where cattle drovers met on their way to markets in the south of Scotland. Dalwhinnie Distillery was established during the whisky boom of the late 1890s by two men from Kingussie. The site was chosen for its access to clear spring water, and abundant peat from the surrounding moors. In 1905 Dalwhinnie Distillery was sold to the largest distilling company in America, Cook & Bernheimer. In the mid 1920s prohibition forced the company to sell the distillery which is now owned by United Distillers.
