Boat of Garten lies on the west bank of the River Spey, 6 miles north of Aviemore and just off the A95. A settlement called Gart has existed in the area since the 17th century, but it was the arrival of the railway in 1863 that gave the village its name. A road led to a ferry boat on the River Spey and, as Loch Garten is closely linked to the river, the station was called Boat of Garten. Known locally as ‘The Boat’, the village is renowned for its RSPB reserve at Loch Garten and although the railway line closed in the 1960s, the railway station and line are now part of the Strathspey Steam Railway which shuttles between Boat of Garten and the railway station in Aviemore.
