Anstruther (known locally as Anster), is the largest of the East Neuk villages. In its heyday, Anstruther was one of the busiest ports in East Neuk and is steeped in history. Even with the general decline of the fishing industry, Anstruther is still a great attraction with its harbour and the popular Scottish Fisheries Museum. A lovely picturesque town, Anstruther's busy harbour is watched over by a row of shops and restaurants. The townÂ’s economy relies mostly on tourism, as well as a few small industries. The estate agents in Anstruther have a mixture of property for sale, comprising of old and new, many of which benefit from sea views. Anstruther is a bustling town with a variety of shops, many of which are in a long line overlooking the harbour. If you like food, you will find plenty of little bars and restaurants, including (officially) the best fish and chips in Scotland at the Anstruther Fish Bar. Other amenities in the town include doctors and dental surgeries, as well as a primary and secondary school. People visiting the town who are considering Anstruther property should take a walk along the cobbled streets and along the rabbit-warren of little alleyways to soak up the atmosphere, and note the dates on the buildings. In the High Street many of the shops still display original signs and advertisements for companies long forgotten. You can be in the ancient university town and golfing haven of St. Andrews in ten minutes, while the larger Fife towns of Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes are just 20-30 minutes away.
