Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in Prestonpans, East Lothian

Property for sale in Prestonpans

Lying on the south coast of the Firth of Forth with a population of about 7,500, Prestonpans looks across a broad bay towards Edinburgh, 8 miles to the west. 'Preston' derives from 'Priest town' and monks were once residents of Newbattle and Holyrood abbeys. As early as the 1100s, locally mined coal fuelled the fires under vast pans to produce the precious commodity of salt. Preston Cross is regarded as Scotland's finest mercat (market) cross, and dates from 1617. It is surrounded by quaint, terraced bungalows built in the 1900s. Preston Tower was the home of the Hamilton family, who turned it into a two-storey Jacobean house. When the tower caught fire in 1663 the family moved to nearby Hamilton House, now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. In the heart of Prestonpans is Prestongrange Parish Church, which dates from 1596 and was one of the first churches to be built in Scotland after the Reformation.
