Alloa is a small burgh in Clackmannanshire, with a population of around 25,800. The town is 6 miles below Stirling, on the north bank of the Forth. Clackmannanshire is Scotland's smallest county and is known as 'The Wee County'. Alloa's most notable feature is the 13th century Alloa Tower, the ancestral home of the Earl of Mar, which is associated with Mary Queen of Scots, who was a close friend of the Earl. The United Glass works, which was founded by Lady Frances Erskine in 1750, is the oldest glass works in Europe still working on its original site.
