Halkirk is a small village with a population of approximately 1,000, situated 7 miles from Thurso and 15 miles from Wick. The name Halkirk comes from the Norse for "High Church" and was originally Ha-kirk-ja. This village is the first planned village in the highlands, the plans were drawn up in 1803 on a grid-iron basis. Every year, on the last Saturday in July, up to 5,000 visitors and locals flock to Halkirk in Caithness for a day of traditional and spectacular Scottish sport.
