Together with Ardrossan and Stevenston, Saltcoats is one of a conurbation of 'Three Towns' on the west coast of North Ayrshire. Its name derives from when salt was a valuable commodity for curing meat and fish, and sea water was boiled away in little houses called 'cots'. More recently, coal mining, fishing, and weaving have been the principal industries, together with some ship building. In the 20th century, Saltcoats developed as a holiday destination, with one of the largest tidal swimming pools in the country. Today, it is still a popular seaside resort with plenty to offer residents by way of local amenities, and road and rail connections.
