Located 9 miles east of Kilmarnock on the A71 in East Ayrshire, Newmilns & Greenholm is a small burgh in the Irvine Valley between Galston and Darvel. From Old English 'niwe' for new and 'myln' for mill, Newmilns has 3,500 residents and many historic buildings such as the imposing three-storey Loudoun Arms. Newmilns Tower House, now a private residence, dates from the early 16th century, and opposite the Loudoun Arms is a fascinating Tollbooth with bell tower, built in 1739. Near the east end of Main Street is Morton Hall, another remarkable building constructed in red sandstone. Next door is Lady Flora's Institute, founded as a girls' school in 1877 in memory of Lady Flora Hastings, one of the daughters of the Earl of Loudoun. She was lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria, but when she succumbed to an illness which distended her abdomen, the Queen incorrectly assumed Lady Flora was pregnant and banished her. A few months later Lady Flora died. Today, Lady Flora's Institute is a charming old people's home.
