Pronounced ‘Mawkh-linn’, Mauchline lies on the southern slope of a rocky ridge, about a mile north of the River Ayr. Once home to Robert Burns, Mauchline is a very attractive town with many old houses built in red sandstone. A bronze statue of Burns’ wife, Jean Armour, who was born in Mauchline and inspired many of his poems, stands within the town which has a population of 4,500.
