In 1107, the original Lodge of the Freemasons, known as the Mother Lodge of Scotland, was founded in Kilwinning at the same time as Kilwinning Abbey. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century linking Kilwinning to Glasgow encouraged the growth of heavy industry and the town grew rich from its engineering works, iron foundries, clay works, and mills for spinning wool.
