Property for sale in Darvel
Darvel is the most easterly town in the Irvine Valley and is near Loudoun Hill. Its grid system of roads reveals that it was created in the mid 18th century rather than starting life as a typical river crossing point. It was built on land owned by John Campbell, the 4th Earl of Loudoun, who established Darvel to provide homes and employment for local people. For many years, almost everyone in Darvel was involved in hand-loom weaving including children but, in 1876, lace making was introduced. Lace is still made in Darvel, and locally produced lace curtains hang in almost every window in the town. At the centre of Darvel is beautiful Hastings Square with its war memorial, flower gardens and Darvel Central Church. In Main Street is the Town Hall, built in red sandstone; the Free Church with its towering spire; the Black Bull pub; the former Turf Hotel; and long lines of one or two storey weavers' cottages. In recent years, new houses have been developed in Darvel, mostly in keeping with the scale of the original buildings, increasing the population to over 3,500.
If you are looking for property for sale in Darvel, there is a good mix of period cottages and new-build houses. For current details of houses for sale in Darvel or information regarding any available flats for sale, please contact Darvel estate agents.
