Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in Cumnock, Ayrshire

Property for sale in Cumnock

Cumnock is situated at the confluence of Glaisnock Water and the River Lugar and it is an area that has seen the development of many new houses and flats in recent years. Currently the population is 13,000, and although Cumnock is considered to be a coal mining town, it is also a notable market town. A Mercat Cross, dating from 1703, stands in the market square in front of Cumnock Old Church, which is one of many imposing buildings that give the town its historical character. Cumnock has a strong socialist heritage - the father of the Labour Party, James Keir Hardie, lived in the town for most of his life. A bust honouring him sits outside the town hall which was built in red stone in 1885. Today, Cumnock is a commuter town with good road and rail links to Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

Amenities for Cumnock properties

Cumnock is host to one of Scotland's best known junior football teams, the Cumnock Juniors. Although successful, Cumnock Juniors have strong competition from neighbouring Auchinleck Talbot and the soccer rivalry between the two towns is intense. For many years there were two secondary schools in Cumnock: Saint Conval’s High School and Cumnock Academy. The latter still serves the town but Catholic children now attend St Joseph's Academy in Kilmarnock. Cumnock has a recently built swimming pool, with gym, sauna and health suite, and an attractive shopping centre complemented by plenty of places to eat and drink. But, for serious retail therapy and entertainment, residents travel west to Ayr or north to Kilmarnock.

Transport in Cumnock

The railway station in Auchinleck is 3 miles north of Cumnock, and is on the Glasgow / Kilmarnock / Dumfries / Carlisle main line. By road, local bus routes serving Cumnock are provided by Western Scottish, which is part of the Stagecoach Group.
