Kirriemuir is a very pretty town with narrow, winding streets, surrounded by hills and glens that are perfect for hill-walking, fishing, deer-stalking, and for shooting game birds. There is also a fine 18-hole golf course to the north of Kirriemuir that offers impressive views. Kirriemuir is immortalised in the book The Window in Thrums, and is described by J.M. Barrie as a wee red toonie in respect of its red sandstone buildings. Barrie is buried in a simple grave in Kirriemuir cemetery and a statue to his world famous creation, Peter Pan, stands in the centre of town in front of Hooks Hotel.
J.M. Barries birthplace is a white-walled terraced cottage near the centre of town that is now a museum. In public gardens by Hooks Hotel is a second statue of Peter Pan and a large crocodile in which children can play. Kirriemuir town centre has a host of interesting shops and buildings including the Town House which dates from 1604 and is now the Kirriemuir Museum. Websters High School is in the Southmuir area of Kirriemuir and it is complemented by Northmuir Primary School and Southmuir Primary School.
