North-west of Aberdeen, on raised land to the south of the River Don, lies the large village of Alford, pronounced without the ‘L’. Built in substantial grey stone, it is an attractive home for 2,000+ residents. In the early 1800s, Thomas Telford constructed a bridge over the river at what is now Bridge of Alford, and it marked the start of Alford’s growth. In 1850 the imposing Haughton Arms Hotel was built, and in 1859 Alford was connected to Aberdeen via the Alford Valley Railway. In 1966 the line was closed, but in 1985 a passenger service to Haughton Park was introduced on a mile of 2-foot gauge track, by the Alford Valley Railway Museum. The iron horse may no longer travel the 25 miles to Aberdeen but Alford is a popular home with commuters on the A944, and with young families escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. Consequently, many of the current houses for sale in Alford are classic, 4-bedroom, detached family houses with integral garage, built within new developments on green field sites.
Estate agents in Alford also represent beautiful, traditional, stone-built cottages in wonderful rural locations; modern, detached bungalows; and converted barns and renovated farmhouses. At the higher end of the market, property for sale in Alford includes impressive, executive-style houses with up to 5 bedrooms, a front door portico, a double garage, and a long drive.
