Worcestershire has plenty to recommend it, including beautiful countryside, thriving commercial centres and good transport links.
Living in Worcestershire
Worcestershire is the archetypal shire county. Located in the heart of England with fine landscapes, a wide range of habitats and wildlife and a notable cultural and historic heritage, this county is quintessentially English.
There is evidence that a lot of London and South-East buyers who have traditionally looked at areas along the M4 are now migrating westwards in search of a combination of more peaceful surroundings and better value for money.
The north of the county takes in the towns of Redditch, Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Kidderminster. Due to their close proximity to Birmingham and the M40 and M, they have developed into thriving commercial centres.
The main landmark in the west are the Malvern Hills, rightly designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Demand has been pronounced for village and edge-of-village properties in South Worcestershire, where there is close proximity to the M50 and M5. This allows good commuting to the Cardiff and Bristol conurbations.
Worcester is a thriving ancient cathedral city and has become one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, maintaining the industries for which it is world famous: Royal Worcester Porcelain and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce.
The city is experiencing an upward trend in the area south of the Cathedral where the old porcelain factory has been converted and developed. Diglis docks and marina are undergoing a major redevelopment.
For those seeking somewhere more peaceful to live, Pershore is a picturesque Georgian market town on the banks of the River Avon, but still close enough to the Worcester to enjoy the benefits a city has to offer.
The town is noted for its Georgian architecture, and most of the premises in Bridge Street and Broad Street are listed buildings.
Transport
Worcestershire's location in the heart of England makes it accessible and closer than you think.
If you are flying into the area, then Birmingham International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away, Manchester is 1h 50, Heathrow is 2h 10 and Gatwick is 2h 50 away. Worcestershire has good road links to the major motorways (M5, M6, M40, M42, M50) and London is just 2½ hours away. Worcestershire and the Cotswolds are at the heart of the British Rail network with main line routes to London, the Midlands and the North and the South West of England.
History and culture
Worcester is home to the beautiful County Cricket ground and boasts one of the oldest racecourses in the UK.
The Victorians left a fine legacy of spa towns throughout the county. The therapeutic qualities of Droitwich Spa's Brine Baths have been known since Roman times.
Worcester's fortunes were based on glove making, pottery manufacture, salmon fisheries (long gone), and the famous Worcestershire sauce.
The Royal Worcester Porcelain site and its museum, factory and café are close by.
