The original settlement of Swindon is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Suindune, a name believed to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon words swine and dun i.e. pig hill! Swindon remained a small market town until the mid-1800s when the industrial revolution accelerated its growth. Probably the most significant event in Swindon's history occurred in 1840, when it was selected to house the large Swindon railway works for the Great Western Railway. During much of the 20th century the railway works was the largest employer in the town until a large section was closed in the 1970s. These days, major employers include Honda, BMW, W H Smith, the computer company Intel, and several insurance and financial services companies. The futuristic Motorola production plant in Abbey Meads was used for the setting of a Turkish Oil refinery in the James Bond movie, 'The World Is Not Enough'.

Amenities for Swindon properties

Swindon may not have the sophisticated image of Bath or Brighton, but it does have a lot to offer by way of High Street retailers, leisure facilities and museums. Mcarthur Glen Designer Outlet is a shopping mall created within the structure of the disused railway engine works built by Brunel. While one half shops the other half can visit the Steam Museum next door and dream about a bygone era. Other places of interest include the Museum of Computing, the National Museum of Science & Industry, the Railway Village Museum, Swindon Arts Centre and Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.

Swindon has two major leisure centres called The Link Centre and The Oasis. Golfers can enjoy playing against the backdrop of the Marlborough Downs at Broome Manor Golf Complex. Public parks include Lydiard Country Park, Stanton Park, Barbury Castle, Queens Park and Coate Water.

Transport in Swindon

The M4 motorway is to the south of Swindon travelling west to Bristol and Wales and east to Reading and London. The railway station in Swindon is on the main London to Bristol line and also the line north to Gloucester and the west Midlands.
