On the southern edge of the Cotswolds, Malmesbury is the oldest borough in England, with a charter given by Alfred the Great. The town is famous for its Abbey although only a part of the Abbey remains. It was from the Abbey tower that Eilmer, the monk, donned wings and leapt in 1,000 AD. He "flew" more than 200 metres before breaking his legs on landing and settling down to become a distinguished scholar.
